A British film festival in Dinard

Judging by the packed-out pre-festival outdoor screening of Dinard’s 18th British Film Festival, this year’s show promised to be bursting at the seams, writes French News. Cinema-goers were well advised to come early.

Some 20 out-of-competition films opened with Ken Loach’s latest offering ‘It’s a Free World’, starring Kierston Wareing and Juliet Ellis. Other must-sees are ‘This is England’ by Shane Meadows, ‘Ruby Blue’ by Jan Dunn starring Bob Hoskins and festival president Josiane Balasko and ‘I really hate my job’ by Oliver Parker with Neve Cambell (a welcome come-back of 'Party of Five' all-time favourite) and Shirley Henderson.

As promised, a James Bond theme is being played throughout this year’s festival. Guest speaker Nicolas Cebille gave a conference tracing the evolution of Her Majesty’s most famous spy on October 2 in the Stéphan Bouttet theatre after the projection of a 30-minute 007 documentary.

Another run-up event to the festival-proper was the presence of Mariano Otero, the world famous artist who designed this year’s absolutely delightful festival poster. Otero was on hand to sign copies of his posters on Wednesday October 3 at Dinard’s Palais des Arts -- la vache! where was I? This was followed by a screening of a 90-minute selection of the best British short films shown at the festival over the last two years.

There is also a host of admission free films this year, including the brilliant ‘Notes on a Scandal’ (Judi Dench surpasses herself in this film and Kate Blanchet is her usual wonderful self), ‘A Cock and Bull Story’, ‘History Boys’, ‘Shaun of the Dead’, ‘Twenty Four Seven’, ‘Very British Gangster’ and the 'hoping-to-be-shocking'‘Irina Palm’, starring Marianne Faithfull.

La Roque St-Christophe - suffers severe fire damage

In the heart of the Vézère valley, between Les Eyzies-- which is regarded as the 'world capital' of Prehistory-- and Montignac -- where Lascaux II is found, is the magnificent troglodyte city of La Roque St-Christophe, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the 'musts' on my list for visitors to Chateau Lalinde to see.

How ironic that this site, which has been a troglodyte city for the last 55 000 years -- right up to the 16th century, should now, in 2007, be closed to visitors. On 31 August a huge fire broke out -- apparently due to an electrical fault -- which burnt down the entire reception area -- a beautifully designed glass and timber structure which melded in so perfectly with the natural rock and ancient historical structures already in place.

What a disappointment to arrive there yesterday with visitors and find that we could not climb up to the city and wander around in pre-history for a couple of fascinating and enjoyable hours. But the friendly official on site -- specifically there to apologise to visitor for the inconvenience and recommend other sites in the area to viist instead, informed us that the site will be open again in 2008 -- ready for the next summer season of tourists to the Dordogne area.

Information: La Roque St-Christophe is a pre-historic troglodyte site dating from the Mousterian era, which has been lived in by successive generations of man. Its situation is very dramatic with good views, rising vertically 80m from the Vezère valley. The whole site is half a mile long and rises in five galleries dug out from the rock. The fascinating remains of some of the buildings can be seen – like the Church, as well as some medieval weaponry, while other parts of the site have been excellently reconstructed.
Our recommendations: For children this is possibly the most interesting above ground pre-historic site – particularly for those who are not keen on either underground visits or families who prefer an unguided visit (leaflet provided with an English translation). It is possible to take a light-weight buggy around the site although care is needed in places.
Location: Just off the D706 at Le Moustier, 10km NE of Les Eyzies.
Free parking, small café and picnic tables at the site with lots of shade, a little pond -- and duck happy to receive a few crumbs.
General info: Opening times – daily in peak season 10.00 -7.00.
    Tel: 05 53 50 70 45 other times.

    Another Feast of Divine Music

Last night, once again in the Abbey church of Paunat, the Dordogne was most privileged to have perform for us the amazing and delightful ensemble of Les Violoncelles Francais -- a group of the best cellists in France, performing together under the masterful direction of Roland Pidoux.. offering an array of surprises and old favourites, playing a charming game of musical chairs between each piece so as to be in the right place for each different arrangement -- another perfect ummer's evening in the countryside of France!

7/7/7 : Live Earth Day Picnic at Chateau Lalinde

Many came throughout the day -- some walking and others coming a long way on their bicycles - each bringing with them a picnic of locally grown and produced food -- and lots of ideas how we can, in our own and individual ways, make this planet a better place for the next generation.

The laptop was on standby, available to all, with Al Gore's message for the day, conservation and global warming info films and documentaries, and links to all the Live Earth events around the world. The children swam and enjoyed watching the ducks and the swans on the river. The forests across the Dordogne formed a beautiful backdrop to a beautiful day - and served as the perfect reminder of why it is important that we do care, that we do make an effort, that we do fight for the continuing existence of our planet.

The main thing that came out of all the discussions and brainstorming, was that on our own there are many little things that we can do to stem the destruction of our planet, and yes, it is important that we each do what we can, but it is TOGETHER that we can achieve so much more. For example, the SNPE, in Bergerac, "the world’s leading producer of industrial nitrocellulose, which generates over 80% of sales in export markets, through a distribution network with operations in some 50 countries worldwide...." is also responsible for massive pollution in the Bergerac area - both in the air and in the river. "What can one do?" was the question. The unspoken fear of the individual trying to take on the industry giants. "Ah! But if we all stood together and armed ourselves with knowledge of the industry, with information about their method of functioning, about their ways and means, and if we knew what the alternatives are -- what these giants could do if they set their minds to it, if they knew that the people who are their employees and their customers and their shareholders were not satisfied with them polluting our world, then we CAN confront them with conviction and courage and perseverance - and make them change their ways!

And, as a start Albert will talk to the employees who come to his language school for language lessons and get them talking and thinking.......... a very good start that will be! And then, when the municipal elections take place next year, we will all attend meetings and raise these issues with the politicians running for office. --- If Nicolas Hulot could make the presidential candidates commit to making the effort, so can we at municipal level!
And as for all the paper mills and factories along our stretch of the river, we will do the same.
An excellent start --- and all that just from a leisurely picnic alongside the river!

The SNPE is a French chemicals group, founded in 1971. It generates annual sales of 850 million euros, including more than half for exports, and has 5,000 employees in Europe, Asia and North America.

Originally a defense company, SNPE has diversified over the years and expanded its international business. It now operates worldwide, with a network of representatives and commercial subsidiaries in more than 70 countries.

SNPE was reorganized into four subsidiaries respectively dedicated to energetic materials, explosives for construction, civil engineering and mining, fine chemicals and speciality chemicals. --- It is the speciality chemicals which are now produced here in Bergerac.

Some of this nitrocellulose is used to make propellants but the majority goes to everyday products such as paint, varnish, ink and nail polish.
BERGERAC NC is the only manufacturer in the world to produce nitrocellulose for exclusively cosmetics applications. It has built up broad-based expertise in nail polish, keeping pace with international fashion trends and incorporating the latest technologies. Durlin, the brand name for its products, calls on leading-edge research to stay ahead of the curve. It offers a wide variety of products, including colored varnishes, nail and cuticle treatments, and pearled and coloring dispersions.

"You can always count on us." is their slogan. My question is "Can we? Can we always count on you? Even when it comes to cleaning up your act. Stopping the pollution in Bergerac by spending some of those €850million that your sales generate annually on building mechanisms into your operations? Can we count on you to consider your employees and your community?"

They do seem to have great concern for the safety of their employees, but what about their environment? Has anyone raised this issue with them?

Each guest left with a pledge to change their own corner of the world, tucked in with a beautiful water colour of the Chateau Lalinde - as a small gift to remind them of a very worthwhile - and pleasurable - day, and of why it is important that we do care and do make an effort.

The history of the Dordogne has one of the best and simplest examples of reclycing and conservation, dating back undreds of years. Read my article on the Exapatica.com site about the gabares throw-away boats and be inspired! And join us in standing together to make a difference. Together we CAN do it!

And what are YOU doing to save the planet?

Somebody said to me other day -- "Um, no, we won't be attending a Live Earth party -- it is not really our thing, you know"....

Is the Planet's assured future "not your thing" either?

Thank goodness there are people out there who realise that "A true conservationist is a man who knows that the world is not given by his fathers but borrowed from his children." (~ John James Audubon). Thank goodness that there are people who do care -- because thanks to those, ---you - whose 'thing it is not' --- can breathe oxygen, can drink water, can sit in the shade of a tree, can eat healthy food, can enjoy a sunset, can see the stars' exquisite brilliance in a moon-less night sky.

    Breaking records on 7th July!

We've just been looking through the list of Avaaz Live Earth parties and it's unbelievably exciting! We're got over 2500 events taking place in 114 countries around the world. It's a fantastic response, and it keeps on growing!

When July 7th comes, we'll all be part of the biggest de-centralised global event ever organized. Live Earth is connecting 2 billion people around the world in a message of solidarity that will join us together to stop a climate catastrophe before its too late. It's serious stuff, but the parties are going to be fun! There will be actions to take, a special message from Al Gore and lots more.
Just browsing through the venues for Avaaz's first global virtual party is really exciting...the most common place is "our house", but see below - everyone, from the President of Sierra Leone to Bosnian clubbers, is going to be involved! Here's a snapshot of some of the events taking place:

    * Iligan City, Philippines - Uling & Ice Restaurant - Be a part to Combat Climate Crisis

    * Freetown, Sierra Leone - Young Leaders of Sierra Leone Avaaz Live Earth party at China Friendship House, with the President of Sierra Leone, youth groups and diplomats in attendance

    * San Cristobal de Las Casas, Mexico - Centro Cultural Alternativo "La Fuente" - Amigos del Planeto Vivo ("bike ride, organic buffet, talks, live concert and meditation")

    * Prnjavor, Bosnia-Herzegovina - "Little Europe for Big Earth" at the Absolut Club, hosted by Opti Myst

    * Ohio, USA - "The World is One Country" at the Dayton International Peace Museum, "join with other earthlings, exhibits, workshops and food"

    * Cotonou, Benin - Salle des fetes - "Pour le Salut de notre planete", with projections, games for children and adults, and theatre

    * Toronto, Canada - Cabbagetown Community Party at the Union Yoga Center - "Together, we'll make 7/7/07 a turning point in solving the climate crisis!"

    And --------tu-da-da-du-mmmmmmmmm--- of course :
    * Chateau Lalinde, Lalinde,:
Bring a picnic, bring your family and your friends and let's get together to brainstorm what each one of us can do to help save our planet for the
    next generation! 11am on 07-07-07

If you have not yet replied, do so now - but Be There!

21 June : The National Day of Music in France.........

    .....and in all francophone countries.

Can it already be a year ago that I wrote about the National Day of Music in France? How time flies!

Here we are again on the 21st of June and all over France and worldwide every person who can make music, is doing so -- no matter where, be it a formal recital or performance, a small venue and audience, in a grand hall or in the streets -- we all celebrate life with music!

Here in Lalinde we celebrated the Day of Music on Saturday and the entire village, young and old, man, woman and child, came to the streets of the village and the square to listen and play and sing and dance until the early hours of the morning -- every kind of music, from ancient traditional to jazz, the blues and heavy metal -- something of everything for everyone! -- And of course, in true style and according to tradition, the Lalinde Rugby Club was out in full force to provide the delicious barbecue saucisses, frites, steak - and the wine and beer!

The Fête de la Musique was first started in France back in 1982 by the then Minister of Culture, Jack Lang - after the concept of Marcel Landowski in 1981, and it soon became an an international celebration of free live music in more than 300 cities worldwide including New York, Berlin, Rome, London, Bamako, Suriname, Bahrein, Havana, Tel-Aviv, Cairo, Luxembourg, Mexico City, Sydney, Johannesburg and of course, Paris -- where the now famous Les Nuits Blanches have become an annual event to which hundreds of thousands people come. Amongst those performing tonight in the Hippodrome of Auteuil are Mika, Avril Lavigne, Tokio Hotel (they of what-the-heck-ARE-they??-fame), the inimitable Fatal Bazouka, Christophe Maé, Yannick Noah, Calogero, Christophe Willem, Shy’m, Vitaa, Kamini, La troupe du Roi Soleil, David Guetta, Laurent Voulzy, Bob Sinclar, and many more. (But what possessed Tele2 to get the dodo, Olivier Minne to emcee the event?? He has absolutely no idea of how to do it and leaves the artists dangling in mid air, has big silent pauses, is ill at ease and absolutely no stage presence...........do I sound disgusted? I am!)

The National Day of the Mills : Journee Nationale Des Moulins

17 June 2007 once again saw the National Day of the Mills -- and in the Perigord Dordogne alone there were 21 beautiful ancient wind- and water flour mills to look at.

I would have loved to have gone to see more, but only had time for four -- mills in various state of repair and restoration. I visited one wind mill -- that of Le Bournat at Le Bugue, which is in a perfect condition, being there all year round for visitors to come and admire. I then drove some distance through the most beautiful countryside, tine narrow lanes and thick oak forests. to finally arrive at Le Coux and Le Moulin de Ladiere which sits on the Le Boule stream. Here I was welcomed by a gorgeous farmyard of horses, chickens and a delightful Billy Goat --- and a charming young man who acted as a most informative guide, explaining the entire intricate workings of a water mill with enthusiasm and an obvious pride and pleasure. From there I continued on along the Dordogne river to Vezac where I visited the almost completely restored Moulin de L'Eveque which is situated on a tributary of the Dordogne, namely the Pontou. My last port of call was close to home, the mill of Lalinde -- which is in fact just outside Sauveboeuf, Le Moulin du Milieu a Sauveboeuf. This mill has been restored to its pristine original state and is in full working order -- a fascinating process to watch -- in particular as one realises that what you see is exactly what one would have seen 500 years ago! Several happy visitors walked away with soft white flour which had been milled right there in front of them.

This is one industry which is nowhere near ready to hang up its boots!

Arts and Crafts -- and ancient traditions in the Dordogne

On a misty Sunday in June in the Dordogne there can be few pleasures as special as going on a journey of discovery of the ancient and traditional arts and crafts of the countryside.

Last Sunday was such a day -- and what a wonderful discovery it was! Not only seeing the old traditions kept alive and thriving, but discovering that it is the young people that are doing so.

One would have expected these old crafts and traditions to be practised by the older generation whilst the youth are out and about and enjoying their electronic gadgets and toys and pastimes. But no! Whether it is the art of felt making, basket weaving, imprinting cloth with leaves from the walnut tree or platting wheat, the average age of all the artisans I saw on Sunday demonstrating their amazing skills, could not have exceeded 30! And wherever there was a wrinkled old man or woman showing us how it their specific art or craft should be done, there was always a young'un close by watching and learning and trying it out. There is such a variety of arts and crafts to learn -- and ideal reason to rent a chateau -- come to Chateau Lalinde during the summer, and organise a superb activity holiday for yourself and the family!

And then, driving from beautiful Limeuil's hill top arts and crafts fair, to continue my day of discovery -- by visiting some of the many old mills in the Perigord, my surprise was even greater when I was welcomed by quite a few of the old mills by gorgeous young boys and girls who proudly demonstrated and explained the workings of a wind - or water mill to everyone who showed an interest. Some of these mills have been beautifully and meticulously restored, whilst others are in the process of - or waiting to be restored, and once again, it was not the older generation that shared their excitement with me, but the grand- and great grand children of the owners of the mills.
